Why Plan a Cellar

Have you ever thought about starting your own cellar, or adding to an existing one on a regular basis? The Masters of Wine at Hicks and Don have provided expert advice for over forty years and created some of the most rewarding cellars, both for drinking and investment.

Whatever your motives for building a cellar, Hicks & Don’s Cellar Plan is designed to help you to provide everything you need. Funded by a monthly standing order, the scheme is designed to encourage plan holders to lay down wine on a regular basis – either in our temperature controlled cellar space in Wiltshire or in your cellar at home.

Having established your annual drinking requirements, we aim to provide wines for affordable everyday drinking, as well as for dinner party level; these may also prove to have good investment potential.

Why start a Cellar Plan with Hicks & Don?

The Cellar Plan’s principal aim is to secure immature wines that will, with time, benefit from maturation and prove exceptional drinking. You will buy the majority of wine Ex Cellars or “en primeur,” thereby securing the pick of the crop at the best price when the wine is still in cask and lying abroad.

Freight, insurance, duty and handling are charged (at cost) when the wine is ready to be shipped.

Benefits of being a Cellar Plan Customer

You have access to over 40 years experience of buying, selling and laying down wines – in the form of Hicks & Don’s exceptionally knowledgeable cellar Advice team, and some of the most experienced palates in the country. Our buyers Ronnie Hicks, Robin Don and Anthony Barne are all Masters of Wine who have probably been assessing vintages “en primeur” for longer than any other buying team in the business.

Stock lists detailing the wines purchased under the scheme, along with the state of their maturity and the values at which we have insured each wine, are issued on an annual basis.

If you want to free up some cash and sell some of your wine we can often arrange a sale to a new customer at a price that is beneficial to both parties. We also have excellent contacts in the Trade, and close relationships with Christies and Bonhams auctioneers.

Investment

A huge amount has been written on the investment potential of wine. Long haul investment tends to centre on Bordeaux and is it fair to say that money can be made if you pick well, generally buy 'en primeur' and have enough to spend in the first place. However as with any investment and the more so with wine which is not covered by any regulatory body, there is absolutely no guarantee that you will realise a profit. The only result that can be guaranteed with any confidence is a cellar full of wonderful wines.

If your main motive for creating a cellar plan is for investment potential then you can be confident that Hicks & Don's Cellar Plan team will do its utmost to ensure success. It has the latest researched information to hand about fine wine prices and will be best placed to make a reliable decision of what is considered to be a best buy. Quality, rarity and ageing potential are the main factors influencing a wine's lasting value and it goes without saying that all these aspects are considered prior to purchase being made - journalistic comment can also help.

Payment

Hicks & Don's Cellar Plans are funded by standing order, with contributions from as little as £100 per month. This amount may be adjusted at any time by the completion of a new standing order mandate. Should you wish to cancel your Cellar Plan you can do so at any time.

Wine Storage & Stock Withdrawal

We can arrange to store your wine in the bond warehouse at Corsham, Wiltshire with our associated specialist storage company R.S. Hicks Ltd. Please ask for terms. Alternatively, customers can decide to have wine delivered to their own cellars.

Customers' Private Reserves are insured at replacement market value.
