The 2010 VintageThis is the third great Bordeaux vintage in 10 years, but completely different to either of the other two; 2005 and 2009. Because it is so different, it should be represented in the cellar of every Claret lover but in the expectation that its wines will in most cases take longer to mature and will probably outlast both the 2005s and 2009s. One thing that this vintage certainly has in common with 2009 is that, in selecting the right wines to buy - the successful 2010s - balance is all and the less expensive the wine, the more important it is to follow good advice. This is not a vintage you can "choose with a pin."
Uneven flowering in the Spring led to a small crop which ripened and was harvested in dry weather conditions, producing grapes with high sugar, good acidity and some of the highest tannin readings ever recorded. As a result the wines have great concentration. In the top châteaux, the Crus Classés, which can afford the best and most skilful winemakers, some remarkable wines were made: wines with superb concentration and fruit to balance the generous tannins and alcohols of the vintage. It was an Elizabeth Taylor of a vintage, with an abundance of everything but requiring skilful management to harness the potential. The 2010's will need to mature for a longer period than usual - say fifteen to twenty years and will keep for ages. They will be truly memorable.
Among the less expensive Clarets, which should have rather shorter maturing periods, our tasting team made their selections with great care, avoiding many an unbalanced wine with too much tannin and not enough fruit to support it. If you buy the less expensive wines from this vintage without the right advice, you may be very disappointed.
On the team visiting Bordeaux to buy this vintage we had two Master of Wine who, between them, have 65 years experience of buying en primeur! If you follow our selections, we are confident that you will put in your cellar some remarkable wines for the price. | |
